Our History

The original roots of The Wesleyan Church are found in the New Testament, sharing with the early church, the saving and sanctifying grace which comes through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Later roots stem from the Methodists of England and America (under John Wesley) and the Wesleyan Methodists, which formed from the Methodists in 1843 over the issue of slavery and other depleting standards of Christian living, including the neglect of teaching on sanctification.

Through a merger in 1968, the church changed its name to The Wesleyan Church. Our headquarters is in Indianapolis, Indiana, and churches and missionaries are now located in many countries of the world.
Our local church located at 51 Palace Road opened in 1941, though the Napanee work started in the early 1930s in other locations. It was part of the Standard Church of America and Canada, also in the Wesleyan (Methodist) tradition. This church did some great work through the years and in 2004 merged with The Wesleyan Church of America and Canada, where there were broader opportunities in missions, education, and ministry.
